Michael! I love your vulnerability and honesty. I'm glad and grateful you've re-discovered your Rhythm. One habit that has changed my life is Journaling: Every day for the last year and a half and over 1000 entries the last 3 years. It has helped me get order. I started journaling only in the morning with observations of the previous day and expectations of the present day. I now Journal twice a day - once in the am and once in the pm - I wrap up weekly, monthly, quarterly and even annual entries. This has given me an appreciation of the value of time, the compounding effect habits have over time, as well as a sense of accomplishment. It's bred questions like: What did I learn last (day, week, month, year, etc)? Naturally, I ask that question on birthdays and I'm astounded by the answers. It's, overall, made me more conscientious and present - those are gifts. Can't wait for your next entries!!!
That sounds outstanding. My own journaling isn't nearly so orderly, but I love how you do it. I find that writing, whether it's sharing with others or in a journal, always helps me to bring a lot of clarity to my thoughts. What I think in my head is one thing can often look different on paper.
In pondering Rhythm of resilience: A habit id like to share falls under the category of giving my future self a gift - or gifts. In this case, i think of myself awakening at 4:45am tomorrow morning (“4am Dave”) and when the end of my current day arrives, i ask myself, “What could i do now to make it real easy on 4am Dave”?
Sometimes it means cleaning up the kitchen and making coffee, sometimes it means loading the dishwasher or leaving a reminder note for myself. It is a practical way for me to increase my self awareness and to connect with parts of myself that i may not be tuned into at the moment. I see it as an act of self love. When 10pm Dave sets 4am Dave up for success- all of our days tend to go smoother😎
Very cool idea. Thank you! I have a hard time remembering to do good things for "future Mike" sometimes -- I have to keep reminding myself that he's worth it!
First off you are using the wrong floss. I use those picks, I guess you call them ,made by GUM. So easy to use. Hated flossing, now I use these every morning for years!
I don't know if you would call it a habit, but I listen to what people say. I may not have the words to say back sometimes but at least I gave them my attention. I have tried journaling so many times through out my life but after a few days I give it up cause I think my life is boring; same thing happens every day, what can I write about? I have a few notebooks though that I wrote to God every night. About my thoughts and feelings, things bothering me in my life or the world. About my friends and family, church, just praying for them. I am trying to make reading the bible and devotions an every day habit and I guess that's working out pretty well. I'd like to get a journaling Bible. But am afraid I might give up on that.
I also want to say I enjoy reading all of your blogs. Thank you for sharing your thoughts, memories and feelings. Hope you had a nice vacation!
Thanks, Sherry! My kids use those picks -- maybe I should try them.
Listening is such an amazing skill, one that so many of us fail to nurture in ourselves. I think I'm sometimes good at it and sometimes not -- I'm still working on it.
Love the “Rhythm of Resilience”. That exact thing is something I’ve been struggling with recently. I can’t answer the question with the one thing, but I will say that I’ve been trying to do at least one thing a day to move along a project/chore/hobby. Not just work/couch/sleep/repeat. Maybe I’ll have to get back to you
A few years back, I wrote a number of things on index cards -- things that would be productive or creative uses of my time. I put them in a box with the intention of pulling one out whenever I had some free time, instead of frittering it away. Unfortunately, that box is sitting on a shelf, unused for a long time. I hope you have a better experience with it than I did! Good luck!
